What is Hygge?
Is hygge the secret to a happy life? At some point in our lives, we all seek comfort, peace, and a world free of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, the world we live in today brings daily challenges, unexpected happenings and at times seems totally out of our control. We can never achieve total solace, but we can consciously seek ways that give us calm, comfort and soothing surroundings and experiences.
It is believed that “Hygge” (pronounced hue-guh or HOO-GA) originated in old Norwegian, meaning “well-being”. It is recorded that the Danish embraced it in the 18th century through practices and writings to ease stress from the wintery weather and boredom.
There are several books written on the subject. One of my favorites and the first book I read on the subject. “The Little Book of Hygge” is written by Meik Wiking. Its available on Amazon. Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, Copenhagen. Doesn’t that sound like a wonderful job? The book provides a delightful perspective on the subject and many examples of creating hygge in your life.

Learning about hygge changed the way I look and feel about the things around me. Once I consciously noted what gives me the feeling of well-being, I began creating hygge all around me. I added soft lighting, chose comforting colors, created relaxing spaces and most of all began thinking in a whole new way.
